SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE (1984) This was a rare instance in which I was the only artist asked to design for a major musical. I created three posters. It was very early on in the process – so much so that the second act hadn’t been written yet. I was just told, “It takes place 100 years later.” The torn Seurat painting with the modern legs was an instant favorite. I was asked by Gerald Schoenfeld and Bernard Jacobs of The Shubert Organization to show a different background color option. The original was turquoise. I chose orange (a memorable lyric from the show.) I met Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine on the stage of the Lyceum Theatre, where they were holding auditions, to show them the revised piece. (The musical played on Broadway at the Booth Theatre.) I don’t know how actors do it. I was petrified – but they loved the finished art. Of all the posters I’ve designed, it remains my favorite.
