MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG (2011) I’ve always been a huge Encores! fan and it was a tremendous honor to be asked by Hawley Abelow and Christopher Williams to create the three poster designs for the upcoming 2012 season of the City Center Encores! series. City Center was about to unveil the spectacular renovation of its theatre. To give their graphics a fresh start as well, a new format had been created to house all of their posters and ads. This presented a particular challenge for me. After a career of designing posters in a traditional/theatrical/vertical format (14” x 22”), the new City Center look left me with an extremely horizontal space to design for (since the required billing for each show would live on the bottom third of the poster.) After I recovered from the shock, I found it a refreshing design exercise. It may not sound very complex to you, but I found it difficult at first to think horizontally after 30+ years of designing vertically!
