CYMBELINE (2011) It is always a special occasion when asked to design for a Scott Morfee, Jean Doumanian and Tom Wirtshafter production. On this go-round, they were teaming up with Fiasco Theatre to re-mount their earlier workshop of Cymbeline. Of course, it would be staged at Barrow Street Theatre. This play, like many other of Shakespeare’s, tells a very convoluted story involving kings, queens, and those in line for a throne. Throw in some country-folk, a ring, a bracelet, a beheading, mistaken identity, and a miraculously simple box (the only real stage prop for this show) and you start to get a sense of the broad plot-line. I wanted to design a strong, bold graphic image that could be seen from a block away. The poster depicts the ticking off of the various characters in line for the throne, hopefully in a humorous and attractive way. Presented on a bare-bones budget, one of the remarkable aspects of this Cymbeline was that it had a cast of six playing the numerous characters. Thus, the hand has six fingers.
